Armed Police Seize Knifeman Outside Parliament

From Telegraph:
A suspected knifeman was shot with a stun gun and then arrested by armed police in a possible terrorist incident outside Parliament.

The unnamed man was hit with a Taser outside the Palace of Westminster after he reached for a knife when approached by officers, Scotland Yard said.

The incident took place just yards from where Khalid Masood was earlier this year shot dead trying to storm the Palace of Westminster with a knife.

Scotland Yard said it was "open minded as to whether terrorism was a motive".

A statement said: "At this time it is too early to understand the motivation so we have not declared this a terrorist incident.

"However given the location, the circumstances and recent tragic events, the Metropolitan Police counter terrorism command will be investigating this incident.”

Witnesses heard shouts of "knife! knife! knife!" as the man was tackled at around 11am on Friday.

Bradley Allen, 19, from Barking, east London, said he saw the man with clenched fists moments before he was detained.

Mr Allen said he was walking past Parliament when he saw a man "stood there, who looked quite angry with fists quite clenched".

"He stared at me and my mate and we walked past him. Within seconds there was a shout and police ran out of the front gate shouting at him 'Get on the floor, get on the ground'.

"Within seconds he was on the ground - I'm not sure whether he was Tasered - I'm not sure how he got down there, but in seconds it was over.

"Armed police everywhere, telling everyone to move back, and we all got pushed back."

A man in a grey hooded top was photographed with his hands cuffed behind his back, close to Parliament’s Carriage Gates.

Parliament has been on heightened alert since Masood killed five when he drove a hire car at pedestrians along Westminster Bridge and them stabbed a policeman to death as he tried to get into Parliament.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “A man was detained near to the Palace of Westminster.

“The man - aged in his 30s - was arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife.”
