Imam Arrested For Molesting Seven Year Old Kulgam Boy

From Kashmir-Reader:
Police in Kulgam have nabbed a local Imam accused of sexually abusing a seven year old boy in July last year.

The Imam was on run after perpetrating the crime-at a time when a public uprising was at its peak in Valley- and a subsequent police complaint by the victim’s family.

Identified as 25-year-old Arif Ahmad Lone, son of Ghulam Muhammad Lone of Mohipora village in Kulgam district, the accused was arrested from his house late Sunday night in a police raid.

“We were waiting for his return home. Soon as we got inputs that he is back we swung into action and arrested him,” a senior police official from Kulgam district told Kashmir Reader.

According to the police’s FIR number 173-2017, under section 377 of the RPC, Lone had lured the seven year old boy by offering him some juice and his mobile phone, while he played outside.

“He had asked the boy to play games on his mobile phone and lured him to the secluded toilet compound of a local mosque,” the police report reads.

The police complaint is based on the victim’s and his father’s statements and further reads, “Lone forced himself upon the young boy and sodomized him inside the toilet compound of the mosque.”

A police officer investigating the case told Kashmir Reader that he has never lost faith, even after he was inflicted with grievous injuries during the protests.

“I am supposed to be a tough guy. But watching the child narrate the ordeal, I swear, I broke into tears,” the police official said.

Victim’s father, a mason by profession, told Kashmir Reader that he had gone to buy some medicines and on his return home he found his wife crying.

“My son had come home crying and had narrated the ordeal to his mother,” he said.

He said he went for a police complaint soon after his wife narrated the whole incident to him.

Lone was on Monday produced before the Judicial Magistrate in Kulgam, who has remanded him into ten day police custody.

The victim’s father told Kashmir Reader that the boy, now eight, has been badly scarred and is showing signs of a psychiatric disorder.

“We made him sleep alone since he was very young but after the incident he has refused to be alone. He has not slept well since, except the last few nights after he got to know that the
monster has been arrested,” the father said.

He added that his son was a confident young boy and very bright in studies but the incident has left him so damaged that he often refuses to attend school and rarely goes out to play.

“I am afraid life is never going to be the same for my son and for no fault of his,” laments the father.

Valley’s leading psychiatrist Dr Arshid Hussain told Kashmir Reader that such incidents can severely dent the overall development of the child.

“Insecurity, lack of trust and absolute lack of confidence become personality traits of such children,” Hussain believes.

Hussain explains that the phenomenon is called DESNOS in medical terms, an abbreviation for Disorders of Extreme Stress Not Otherwise Specified, which is acute Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
