An attack at the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul has left at least one dead and fourteen wounded after what is deemed a “complex” gun and bomb attack, according to officials.

Students barricaded themselves in classrooms, using chairs to secure the doors. Nine students were able to escape using the northern entrance.

According to officials, a car bomb detonated outside of a school for the blind before an armed attacker fired at the university. According to police spokesperson Sediq Sediqqui, it is not clear whether there were one or two attackers.

As of now, a terrorist group has not claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the Taliban have been attempting to overthrow the Kabul government for fifteen years.

The U.S Embassy is currently working to account for all of its personnel, according to Elizabeth Trudeau, the State Department spokesperson. The U.S military will be assisting the Afghan forces who responded to the attack. The United States will not be taking a combat role, according to officials.

According to local media, the gunfire has stopped but emergency services are still working to extinguish the fire.
