The Swiss voted in their own referendum in 2014 in favour of limiting migration into the country through a quota system.
But time is running out to enforce the legislation before next February, forcing the the country to challenge the EU’s free movement policy.
The move comes after a refusal by Brussels chiefs to agree to a negotiated deal to limit EU migration across the Swiss border.
But local media last night said Swiss diplomats are hoping to find a compromise by July 6 when a meeting will be held.
It follows claims from a senior Swiss official in February that talks have been on hold until after Britain's in/out referendum on June 23.
The negotiations are said to have been put on hold because Brussels worries the move could "encourage" the Brexit campaign. [...]
